"This fascinating, massive, wide-ranging collection that editors Christopher K. Coffman and Daniel Lukes have gathered together into William T. Vollmann: A Critical Companion will soon be recognized as one of those rare critical books for which that egregiously overused term 'groundbreaking' is fully justified." Larry McCaffery, from the preface of William T. Vollmann: A Critical Companion

The essays in this collection make a case for regarding William T. Vollmann as the most ambitious, productive, and important living author in the US. His oeuvre includes not only outstanding work in numerous literary genres, but also global reportage, ethical treatises, paintings, photographs, and many other productions. His reputation as a daring traveler and his fascination with life on the margins have earned him an extra-literary renown unequaled in our time. Perhaps most importantly, his work is exceptional in relation to the literary moment. Vollmann is a member of a group of authors who are responding to the skeptical ironies of postmodernism with a reinvigoration of fiction’s affective possibilities and moral sensibilities, but he stands out even among this cohort for his prioritization of moral engagement, historical awareness, and geopolitical scope. Included in this book in addition to twelve scholarly critical essays are reflections on Vollmann by many of his peers, confidantes, and collaborators, including Jonathan Franzen, James Franco, and Michael Glawogger. With a preface by Larry McCaffery and an afterword by Michael Hemmingson, this book offers readings of most of Vollmann’s works, includes the first critical engagements with several key titles, and introduces a range of voices from international Vollmann scholarship.

A Nightmare on Elm Circle. Halloween. Night of the Living Dead. These films have been indelibly stamped on moviegoers’ psyches and are now considered seminal works of odium. Guiding readers along the twisted paths between audience, auteur, and cultural history, author Kendall R. Phillips reveals the frightening visions of these films’ directors in Dark Directions: Romero, Craven, Carpenter, and the Modern Horror Film. Phillips begins by analyzing the works of George Romero, focusing on how the richness is used cinematically to reflect the duality between society and chaos, concluding that the unconstrained bodies of the Living Dead films act as a deprecatory intervention into social norms. Phillips then explores the shadowy worlds of director Wes Craven. In his study of the films The Serpent and...

Handle Jermaine Fowler, the First Black Sitcom Lead on CBS in a Generation - Complex

Into the middle the swarm of back lot soundstages and office bungalows at CBS Studios in Los Angeles’ Studio City sits a freshly architectured building, all twinkle and polish, located a walk from the security gate. It’s here, on the fifth floor of the glass-and-metal construction, that comedian Jermaine Fowler has been studiously spending at an advanced hour nights for the past few months going tête-à-tête with fellow scribes in the writer’s room for Superior Donuts , a... When I make it one prickly January afternoon, Fowler is seated in a corner conference room with some of the staff, conversing. As he gets up to show me the set—a donut department store in northern Chicago that films in front of a live studio audience—one of his colleagues leaves him with parting words: “Don’t be nervous, there’s only 200 people counting on you. The 28-year-old, starring in the show as millennial rational guy Franco Wicks alongside established actors Judd Hirsch ( Taxi , Dear John ) and Katey Sagal ( Married With Children , Sons of Anarchy ), has bigger responsibilities. After filming a pilot for the autobiographical Delores & Jermaine with Whoopi Goldberg and in default of to secure a series order in 2015, Fowler now stands as the only black lead actor on any of CBS’ primetime shows. It’s a late round move for CBS, which has become known as a well of Middle America gruel like Kevin Can Wait and MacGuyver , that adds minority-fronted programming to its nearly all-chalk-white schedule. Perhaps it’s CBS’s response to the growing diversity on competing networks and the success they’ve found by letting down their whitewashed guard—in the life few years, ABC struck a chord with black-ish and Fresh Off the Boat. CBS has started to feel off-the-pulse, the type of channel that airs shows your far-off relatives love to defend at holiday dinners. And it’s why, says Fowler, now is the perfect time to give Superior Donuts a shot. “CBS wanted the show for that calculate,” he explains the next day, seated at a gastropub called Larry’s in Venice Beach, a tie-dye hoodie flipped over his hair. He gets us two Larry Burgers, his medium probably, and offers a string of explanations as to why he thinks CBS decided to take a chance. “I feel like they had to shake things up in a way. They did with this show… Personally, I can't determine you why CBS chose right now, but I'll tell you right now the world around us right now is changing, and I feel like they wanted me in a comedy that reflected that. It’s a uncontrived reasoning for Superior Donuts , a series that sees the outside world in a way that would make The Big Bang Theory blush. Adapted from Pulitzer Haul winner Tracy Letts’ play of the same name, Donuts has the old time feel of a CBS show—after all, it’s a multi-cam with a live audience that laughs prerogative on time, every time—but it cuts through the static with a... Superior Donuts sets the tone as intentionally edgy from the start—a pun about vaginas cements it in the first few minutes of the pilot—and it’s a concerted step forward for the network. It took a bit of time for the show to build steam, as the master pilot was shot in early 2016 and didn’t get picked up until the studio recast a few of the actors and re-shot it. But bringing it to lifestyle has its merits. What Fowler is doing for CBS in real life holds up a sort of funhouse mirror to the show’s plot: he stars as Franco, who waltzes into the donut store owned by Arthur Przybyszewski (Hirsch) looking for a job. Even with a new Starbucks across the street stealing all the business, Przybyszewski remains stuck in his ways, rebuffing Franco’s express-thinking ideas. In the second episode, he finally entertains Franco’s idea to make Sriracha-flavored donuts, which becomes a continual gag for shop regular Carl “Tush” Tushinski, played by David Koechner ( Anchorman ). It’s the type of humor that millennials can... Along the way, the supporting performers of regulars peppers dialogue with jocular banter that feels pertinent to now, even.
